Do you have or plan to install a generator interlock kit?
A generator interlock kit allows you to back-feed your entire service panel from a portable generator. This is done by installing a dedicated circuit which connects to the generator and an interlock on the panel which allows only the generator or utility service main to be switched on, but not both. When utility power is lost the following procedure is normally followed:
- Switch all branch circuits to off
- Switch the main breaker to off
- Move the interlock such that the main breaker can not be turned back on, but the generator circuit can now be turned on.
- Connect your portable generator to the generator circuit.
- Begin turning your branch circuits back on to power them from the generator.
However, how do you know how much you can power from your generator? How do you know if a branch circuit has an unexpected device which draws a large amount of current? This could result in generator overload, damage, or wasted fuel.
This problem can be solved with an in line current/voltage monitor on the generator feed. With the in line current / voltage monitor you can see exactly the load on the generator as you turn on your branch circuits. If there is something unexpected you can investigate why. You can also be sure the two phases to your panel are properly balanced.
Our dual voltage/current monitor will tell you the current and voltage of both phases from your generator.
